On Sunday, the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, was contacted by phone by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sameh Shoukry.
The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, stated that the purpose of the call was to consult and coordinate with the UN envoy on the Syrian issue and measures to press for a political solution. This information was provided by the spokesperson.
FM Shoukry emphasizes that Egypt fully supports a diplomatic solution to the Syrian conflict.
Shoukry emphasized Egypt’s full support for the UN envoy’s efforts to reach a comprehensive political settlement under Syrian ownership in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. In light of the high priority Egypt attaches to restoring security and stability in Syria as well as ending all forms of terrorism and foreign interference in it, this was a point that Shoukry emphasized. Resolution 2254 was passed by the UN Security Council.
During the discussion, participants also addressed methods for easing the pain of the Syrian people and emphasized Egypt’s ongoing desire to make a significant contribution to efforts to alleviate that suffering.
The UN ambassador expressed his complete appreciation for the role that Egypt played and its sustained assistance to the United Nations in order to address the Syrian problem. The two parties decided to maintain dialogue and cooperation throughout the coming time.
