The National Umma Party (NUP) emphasized on Sunday that the political process to restore civilian transitional rule has reached its final phases and minimized the differences that have delayed the ratification of the final agreement.
The Umma Party dismisses Sudan’s political stalemate.
The secretary-general of the National Umma Party, al-Wathiq al-Beirir, emphasized during a speech at an iftar event on Sunday that the party is exerting efforts to end the political crisis in Sudan through the ongoing process.
“The political process has reached its final phases, and we anticipate that it will be concluded in the coming days with the signature of the final agreement to launch the next phase of the transition. We reassure our people that deliverance is on the horizon and that the political process has attained its conclusion. The apparent inconsistencies will not impede the conclusion of the restoration of civil transition.”
Umma Party says that Sudan’s political process is not worth waiting for.
The framework agreement signatories postponed the final political agreement due to command and control concerns between the regular army and paramilitary forces and the years-long integration process.
With the stalling of the political process, former regime supporters resumed anti-revolution activities and proclaimed a new campaign to free former president al-Bashir by organizing a Ramadan brunch on Monday. In addition to renewing their condemnation of the political framework agreement, the non-signatories renewed their appeals for a new political process.
Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the Sovereign Council and the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army, issued a statement commemorating the sixth anniversary of the April 6 uprising in which he reaffirmed his commitment to complete the political process “with the required speed, in order to close the door on any attempt at a setback.”
The following day, on April 8, al-Burhan again urged the civil forces to reach an accord. He stated that if the Forces for Freedom and Change and the Democratic Bloc are unable to reach an agreement, they must make way for others. He added that he will form a national consensus coalition capable of effecting the transition.
In his remarks, the NUP secretary-general cited the major objectives of the new transitional government, such as ending the current economic crisis, achieving peace with recalcitrant factions, establishing justice, and dismantling the former regime, among others. In addition, he stated that the party should begin general election preparations at the conclusion of the transitional period.
